Email support

Please don't send Social Security numbers, EINs, or photos of your child by email. We never need them to help you.

Back up and restore

Your records live only on your iPhone, and we keep no copy. A backup file you save yourself is the copy you can count on. Backups are free in every version.

Make a backup

  1. Open Settings › Back up everything.
  2. The app creates one .zip file with all your records and photos. It never includes Social Security numbers or EINs.
  3. Save it to Files, iCloud Drive, or a computer, then confirm when the app asks Did you save the backup file? Closing the share sheet without saving doesn't count as a backup.

The backup file is not encrypted or password-protected, so keep it somewhere private.

Restore a backup

  1. Install First Roth on the iPhone you want to use.
  2. Open Settings › Restore from a backup and pick the .zip file.
  3. Before it restores, the app saves a copy of what's already on the phone, so you can undo the restore.

On the free version, a restore keeps one child active and archives the rest until you upgrade to Family Pro.

Delete all data

  1. Open Settings › Delete all data and confirm.
  2. This erases the app's records, photos, and the copy saved before a restore on that iPhone.

It doesn't delete files you saved or shared outside the app — backup files, PDFs, spreadsheets — or iCloud Backups already made of your iPhone. Delete those copies yourself. Deleting the app also removes its data from the phone.

Cancel or manage Family Pro

Family Pro is billed yearly by Apple, so Apple manages cancellations and refunds.

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  2. Tap your name (Apple Account), then Subscriptions.
  3. Choose First Roth, then Cancel Subscription.

Cancel at least 24 hours before the renewal date to avoid the next charge. Your records stay on your phone after you cancel. For refunds, use Apple's Report a Problem page. Moving to a new phone? Use Settings › Restore purchases in First Roth.

Common questions

Is this tax advice?

No. First Roth is a record-keeping tool. We are not a CPA, tax preparer, law firm, or financial adviser, and nothing in the app or on this site is tax, legal, or investment advice. Rules and limits shown in the app come from published IRS and state sources for the year shown; they can change and may not fit your situation. When in doubt, ask a qualified tax professional.

Does it file my child's W-2?

No. Family Pro fills in a W-2 worksheet from the work and pay you approved, and walks you through filing it yourself, free, on the Social Security Administration's Business Services Online. You review every box and you file it; you're responsible for its accuracy and the deadline.

Does First Roth move money or open accounts?

No. You pay your child the way you normally would, into an account in their name, and record the payment in the app. First Roth does not run payroll, withhold or pay taxes, move money, or open a bank account or Roth IRA. You open the custodial Roth with a brokerage you choose.

Can my child do chores to fund a Roth?

A Roth IRA needs earned income, and that means pay for real work. Everyday family chores — making their bed, clearing their own dishes — paid as an allowance generally aren't wages. Real work you'd otherwise pay someone else to do, at a fair rate, is different.

The IRS describes household employment in Publication 926, Household Employer's Tax Guide. Whether your child's work counts in your situation is a question for your tax preparer — First Roth keeps the records either way.

Where is my family's data stored?

On your iPhone. There are no accounts and no First Roth server holding your records. Your child's Social Security number is typed only when you create a W-2 worksheet and is never saved. You can save a full backup file to Files, iCloud Drive, or a computer whenever you like.
